Year 2.2 – eLearning Teacher Ms. Rose Anne Camilleri

Rosie’s Walk

This lesson was carried out by the eLearning Teacher following the class teacher’s request. In this lesson the children explored different preposition through the story Rosie's walk. Children's attention was drawn to the different prepositions. Then children were given Classcomm handsets and assessment was carried out through the device resulting in a paperless lesson. Children could notice immediately if their replies were correct/incorrect and why.

Complementary Teacher - Ms. Mary Grace Giordimaina

English: Recycling

Lesson Plan: Lesson done with year 5 students on checklist 3

Objectives

  • Children will understand the term recycle and how they can recycle things they use in everyday life.

  • They will also learn some steps that need to be done to understand a text and be able to answer the questions correctly.

Focus:

E-CL 3.07 Appreciates that different kinds of information can be acquired through reading.

E-CL 3.13 Shows comprehension of paragraphs via short written answers.

E-CL 3.15 (i) Reads and understands unfamiliar reading texts of average class level without making more than 5 errors.

Time: 45 mins

Material needed: Recycle song, recycle comprehension handout, Whiteboard.

Warm-up: Children will listen to a song called R E C Y C L E.  The children will be given a handout with the words and they can sing along.

Main Teaching Activity:  Teacher and children discuss the song together. Teacher will ask some questions on recycle to the children, like:  What is recycling all about? What can we recycle?  Where do we take the things to be recycled?   This is done to check the children’s knowledge with regards to recycling.

The teacher will give out the comprehension text and give them some time to read the text silently.  Then the children will have a chance to read the text aloud.  Teacher will explain difficult words.

Then the students will read the questions and re-read the text.  Then we will start the questions and the children will have to find the answer from the text and highlight it.  Finally, the children will have time to answer the questions.

We will go through the questions and answers together.

Closure of lesson:  We can sing the song again.

Recycling, what is it?

Recycling means to reuse or remake something that we would normally throw in the rubbish bin.

Pollution from a factory

Landfill site

What do we recycle?

Recycling helps our planet because we conserve the planet’s natural resources. It helps reduce pollution and greenhouse gases which cause global warming.  For example, making new metal cans is more difficult than recycling old ones. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to power a computer for 3 hours.

What can be recycled?

You can recycle many things such as paper, card, metal, material, plastics (some plastics are difficult to recycle), food waste (leftovers), cooking oil, mobile phones and garden waste.

Most of the above are put in the bin and taken to a landfill site. In the landfill the waste takes 100s of years to breakdown. When the waste is breaking down it makes a gas called methane. Methane is bad for the environment. Recycling stops some waste going to a landfill site.

Answer the questions

1. What does recycling mean?

2. How does recycling help our planet?

3. Can you think of 3 different plastic containers that can be recycled?

4. How long does it take for waste to breakdown in a landfill site?

5. What is methane?

6. Why we should not throw batteries in the rubbish bin?

a. Because batteries can be recharged.

b. Because the chemicals can leak out of the battery at the landfill site and damage the environment.

c. Because we can reuse them again and again and if we throw them away it is wasteful for the environment.

7. Can you think of 3 different paper and card products that can be recycled?

This is a battery. It can only be used once. Inside there are dangerous chemicals that are not good for the environment.
