Litterless Lunch Day

In conjunction with the EcoSkola campaign 2016:

Three kindergarten 2 classes will choose a particular day to promote a LITTERLESS LUNCH DAY. An email will be sent to all the parents to inform them about this activity and to raise awareness about the importance of reducing litter. This subject will also be discussed in class during circle time with the kids.The children will then have lunch together and will be able to see for themselves that it is not difficult after all to have a litterless lunch at school!!

L-Ambjent

  

X’inhu l-ambjent?

 

L-ambjent huwa kull m’hawn madwarna. L-ambjent tagħna jista’ jkun l-iskola, id-dar, il-baħar u l-postijiet l-oħrajn li nsibu ruħna fihom. Huwa importanti li nieħdu ħsieb l-ambjent ta’ madwarna, kemm fid-dar u kif ukoll f’postijiet pubblici. Hemm bosta modi kif nagħmlu dan, u jekk kulħadd jagħmel l-almu tiegħu, nistgħu nagħmlu d-dinja post aħjar.

 

l-ewwel ħaġa li nistgħu nagħmlu hija li nisseparaw l-iskart. F’kull raħal u belt f’Malta hemm dawk li ngħidulhom il-‘bring-in-sites’. Dawn huma landi taż-żibel kbar fejn wieħed jista’ jissepara l-iskart tiegħu u b’hekk, inkunu nistgħu nirreċiklaw. Importanti wkoll li meta mmoruu l-baħar jew xi piknik, nieħdu borża biex nitfgħu ż-żibel fiha u ma narmux fl-art. Jekk naraw lil xi hadd jarmi ħafna żibel mal-art, nistgħu nirrapurtawh bħala twissija. L-aqwa ma nirrapurtawx għal xejn.

 

X’tista’ tagħmel int?

 

Oħroġ barra u ħares int stess lejn in-natura!

 

Għandek ġnien? Għaliex ma tibnix mejda għall-għasafar, tħawwel xi fjuri, jew toħroġ xi vaska jew funtana? Int tgħix f’belt? Imla l-kaxex tat-twieqi u l-gallariji bi pjanti. B’dan il-mod tkun qed tipprovdi oasi għall-għasafar u għall-insetti li jgħixu madwarek u għal dawk li jkunu għaddejjin mill-qrib.

 

Jekk tħobb il-mużika, ipprova ikkomponi għanja fuq ‘insalvaw il-pjaneta’.

 

Meta jkollok xi festin, aħseb dwar xi logħba dwar kif tista’ tħares l-ambjent.

 

Aħna x’nistgħu nagħmlu biex intejbu l-arja?

 

  • Tista’ tuża l-karta riċiklata u prodotti li jistgħu jerġgħu jintuzaw. Fittxu oġġetti li għandhom l-inqas ammont ta’ ppakjar. Pereżempju fis-supermarket, ixtri ħxejjex u frott friski u mhux dawk imgezwrin minn qabel.

 

  • Ivvjaġġa bir-rota lejn l-iskola jew biex iżżur lil ħbiebek u uża t-transport pubbliku kemm jista’ jkun.

 

  • Ifti d-dawl, it-tv u l-kompjuter jekk m’intix u m’għandekx bżonn tużah u qabel ma toħrog mil-kamra.

 

  • Inkoraġġixxi lill-familja tiegħek biex tuża l-karozza inqas ta’ spiss u timxi jew tirkeb rota meta tkun tista’.

 

  • Ipprova uża prodotti li huma ttikkettjati li ma jagħmlux ħsara lill-ożonu.

 

  • Inkoraġġixxi lill-familja tiegħek biex tirriċikla l-friijiet il-qodma jew it-tagħmir ta’ l-air conditioning.

 

X’tista tagħmel int biex ma jinħelix l-ilma?

 

Ftakru li aħna kollha responsabbli għall-ambjent, u kull ma nagħmlu aħna għandu effett jew tajjeb jew ħażin. Viti jqattru, inħallu l-ilma nieżel waqt li nnadfu snienna jew naħslu l-platti, nużaw iżżejjed il-magni tal-ħasil, tisqija u tindif ta’ karozzi, kollha juzaw l-ilma li fih innifsu diġà huwa lussu f’ħafna partijiet tad- dinja.

 

Biex inaqqsu t-tniġġis, l-aħjar ħaġa li tistgħu tagħmlu int u l-familja tiegħek hu li tagħżlu l-prodotti li tixtru u tużawhom bil-għaqal, partikolament għat-tindif u l-ħasil. Fittex prodotti bl-eko-tikketta.

 

Ikteb xi noti biex tfakkar lill-familja tiegħek bħal: ‘Jekk jogħġbok, uża tazza bl-ilma meta taħsel snienek, u tħallix il-vit miftuħ’. Kellimhom dwar l-ambjent u spjegalhom għaliex kif iġib ruħu kull wieħed minna jagħmel differenza.

 

L-importanza tar-riċiklaġġ

 

Irriċikla l-laned, il-flixken, il-boroz tal-plastik u l-gazzetti. Meta tirriċikla, tibgħat inqas skart fil-landfill u tgħin sabiex issalva r-riżorsi naturali bħalma huma siġar, iż-żjut u l-aluminju.

 

Is-sistema ta’ ġbir ta’ skart differenti hija inizjattiva tajba mmens. Għal daqstant, ibda mid- dar tiegħek. Aqsam il-landa taż-żibel tiegħek f’partijiet differenti, kull waħda għal tip speċifiku ta’ skart (skart organiku, karta, hġieġ u plastik), jew uża laned ta’ l-iskart differenti għal kull wieħed minnhom.

 

Jekk nimxu ma’ dawn il-punti kollha li semmejna hawn fuq u kulħadd jagħti sehem tiegħu, niggarantilkom li l-ambjent ikun ferm aħjar u nadif!

When preparing my daughter’s lunch the first thing I keep in mind is that she is a very fussy eater. So it’s useless for me to give her vegetables and fruit unless she is in the mood for them.

Therefore, what we usually do is sit down and decide on some food that we both agree. She loves carrots and strawberries, for example, but if she persists that she does not want them, she won’t eat them. Besides, that is a waste of money. Consequently we make a list of good foods that she likes and will agree to eat. In this way, we both win.

Her lunch box is eco-friendly. Meaning no plastic baggies! I also include a reusable water bottle.

The best advise I’ve been given and practised myself with my daughter when it comes to eat healthy and to “green” her lunch box and habits, is to get her involved.

When children are part of the solution they are more likely to like what is in their lunch and eat it.

K 2.4 - Ms. Mary Grace Catania

Safety: Traffic Lights

This month we are concentrating our work on the topic ‘Transport’, so we focussed on each colour of the traffic lights in order to teach the children their proper function.

The aim of this activity was to understand about the way we should observe road safety rules: when and how should traffic lights be used in order to avoid street accidents. The children learnt that it is imperative to wait for the vehicles to stop before crossing the road even though the lights might be green, indicating that the pedestrian might cross the road.

Then the children coloured the traffic lights accordingly, glued the paper to the cardboard themselves and used the scissors to cut along. Finally we assembled their drawings on the board.

Resources: 12 strawberries, 2small bananas, 2 small glasses of milk, 2 cups of plain yogurt, 2 tbsp. of sugar, containers, hand blender spoon and knife

 

Number of children: 6

 

Duration of Activity: 30 minutes

 

Aim and rationale:

 

Aim:

  • To encourage children to be confident when preparing food

  • See fruits coming from solid to liquid

  • Colour change in the mixture

Rationale:

  • to encourage the children to develop fine tripod grasp when cutting fruit pieces

Adaptations-Differentiated learning for individual needs:

 

Since a child has a difficulty in language, I opted to use the visuals. The visuals could promote speech. I will keep him close to me and ask him a lot of questions.

 

The role of the adult:

Implementation and description of activity

  1. clean and make sure the area you are going to work in is safe and clean

  2. invite the children to sit around you

  3. show the A3 recipe card, to introduce what we are going to do

  4. wash hands properly

  5. wash the strawberries and cut the top off and put into blender

  6. peel the banana and chop in half and put into blender

  7. pour the  half the yogurt

  8. add the tbsp. of sugar

  9. pout the milk into the blender

  10. blend until smooth

  11. pour into a serving glass

  12. serve and enjoy

  13. clean all utensils used

 

Possible questions to be asked:

  1. Can you see a colour difference?

  2. Does it smell good?

  3. Does it tastes good?

  4. Can you notice on thing that happened to the fruit?
